Mad Max Fashion to Take Front-and-Center Stage at Burning Man

When we hear ‘Burning Man’, we’re likely to think of hot desert concerts with celebrities and hippy cultures intermingling for a week of art and community. This year’s Burning Man is August 30-September 7, and if you’re planning to attend, your list of gear and attire should be tailored to both comfort and culture. In fact, with Burning Man’s reputation for bringing out the most fashion-savvy aspects in all its attendees, there are some interesting items that you should consider adding to your packing list.

Burning Man isn’t your typical festival, and your attire and packing list won’t be either! Your camping list will likely entail more of your typical items while your clothing/costume list may venture into somewhat uncharted territories.

The Basics : Camping

One of the biggest aspects of Burning Man is the fact that everybody is forced to camp outdoors in the Nevada desert together. You’ll want to pack many of the essentials that you would on any outdoor excursion, but here’s a list to get you started:

  • Tent

  • Warm Sleeping Bag (those desert nights get chilly!)

  • Air Mattress

  • Propane Tent Heater

  • Camp Chair

  • Camping Cookware

  • Portable Toilet Tent

  • Sun Protection

There are many other accessory items that you can opt to bring, so make sure that you’re stocked and ready to go for your festival experience. You can choose to opt for larger tents or different items tailored to larger parties too if you plan to camp out with friends.

Clothing and Costumes

The second part of Burning Man festival that attracts festival-goers is its reputation as a hub for all things modern and unique. This can be seen every year in the fashion choices of its attendees, and you should plan to pack accordingly. This is the area where folks can get creative, and there are many outlets for creativity that one can choose! One of this year’s sure-to-be fashion hits will be based on the recent release of the movie Mad Max: Fury Road. The similarities can’t be denied : unique fashion choices in desert environments with a hint of danger/excitement.

With that being said, let’s go over some of the clothing and costume-related pointers that you’ll need to keep in mind when packing for Burning Man:

  • Hat/head Protection : No need to stick with a fedora; get inventive and creative while keeping yourself shaded from the blazing desert sun.

  • Goggles and Masks : Great for protecting your eyes and face from the dusty conditions while adding another layer of fashion to your costume.

  • Hiking Shoes : While this may seem silly with your costume, you can have a pair of dusty, muddy hiking boots match this year’s steampunk/Mad Max costuming fairly easily while still keeping comfortable.

  • Gloves

  • Coats and Ponchos : Remember, the nights still get cold, and rain can still happen in the desert. A faux fur coat is a great choice for matching your costume while keeping warm.

A mix of pragmatism and fashion is the key to Burning Man. Just make sure you’ve got your essentials, and add onto your packing list with some interesting and unique costuming items.

Nicki Minaj and David Guetta had even launched the "Hey Mama" video recently, heavily inspired by the Burning Man theme, for which they have received a lot of criticism.
