A Simple Guide to Spoons

Fishing products are supplied by Maurice sporting goods which is the top distributor in the market. They offer high quality products at low prices.

As fishing has advanced beyond a simple wooden pole and string, so have lures evolved to match. While some anglers choose to stick with live bait, there are endless benefits to the choice, selection, and customization that comes with synthetic lures.

As one of the oldest types of lures dating back to the 1840s, spoons resemble the concave shape of a spoon. This shape causes the lure to wobble side-to-side upon retrieval, drawing fish to their movements. Many fishermen believe that there’s truly never a wrong season for fishing with a spoon lure, and its popularity has driven it to be labeled as one of the best all-season, all-species hard lure baits around!

This guide aims to simplify the choice process based on a variety of factors including environmental, preferential, and target specifications. Design

Spoons have one of the most simple designs of any lure out there on the market. Their oblong shape and concave nature catches water producing a wobble and light reflecting flash imitating a fleeing or crippled bait fish. The result is a capitalization on a fish’s sense of sight, and a fish will usually hook itself when it grabs a spoon.

There are several material compositions for spoons as well, and these can be stamped, forged, or molded:

  • Brass

  • Copper

  • Steel

  • Lead

  • Plastic

  • Wood

Most are painted on one side with a polished metallic surface to reflect the sunlight, helping to capture the attention of nearby fish. Some spoons have a hammered or rippled finish that transmits light in multiple directions such as baitfish scales, which helps to scatter light for an even flashier lure.

Action

While the spoon design is simple in nature, there are minute differences in shape and size that can influence the action of the lure.

  • Length: Longer spoons tend to wobble back and forth much more than their shorter counterparts.

  • Concave Depth: The depth of the concave part of the spoon can also influence action, with deeper spoons having more motion than shallower ones.

  • Thickness: Thin spoons used for trolling have an erratic wobble compared to thick spoons, but thick spoons have advantages as well, the extra weight casts better, sinks faster, and will run deeper than thinner spoons.

Target Species

Smaller spoons are best for trout and panfish, while larger spoons are best for bass, pike, walleye, and other large fish. Spoons work best for larger predators such as northern pike, largemouth bass, muskies, walleye, salmon and trout. Keep in mind that most spoons are designed to be fished below the surface.

Types of Spoons

There are five main types of spoons to look out for when shopping our inventory:

Spoon Type

Weight/Species

Guidelines

Casting

Range from ultra light 1/36 ounce for panfish up to over 3 ounces for big muskies, pike and lake trout. The most popular sizes are 1/4-3/4 ounce used for bass, walleyes and pike.

These spoons work best when cast 10 to 20 feet beyond the area they believe the fish are and retrieve through the strike zone. All casting spoons have either a treble or a single (siwash) hook attached with a spilt ring which allows the hook to swing freely as the spoon wobbles.

Trolling

A typical 3″ trolling spoon only weighs about a 1/8 ounce which makes them too light for casting but are an excellent lure choice for salmon, trout, walleyes or other open water species.

These are much thinner and lighter than casting spoons. Flat line trolling requires that the speed and amount of line out should be the main consideration, as well as in using depth control rigging such as downriggers and dipsey divers.

Weedless

1/4 ounce up to 1-1/8 ounce

These feature a single hook welded to the body with a wire guard. Intended for open water and little to no coverage.

Jigging

The best tackle for jigging spoons is low stretch line of 12-20 lbs with a medium to medium heavy fast action rod. These are best for deep schools of large fish.

Jigging spoons are made of metal or tungsten, are flat, thick and heavy and flash when jigged. They are designed to get down quickly reaching the deep water holding fish and are thus best for when you locate a deep water school of fish such as walleye or bass on your electronics.

Surface

Best for large predator fish like bass, pike, and muskies taking refuge in thick cover during summer months.

These ride upward to avoid being caught on snags. Most surface spoons are made from plastics with a few in wood with having an added attractor, mainly rubber skirts.

Colors

Like any other type of lure, color can play a huge role in your success with spoon lure fishing. Generally, bright lures are used in bright light conditions dark lures in low light. Spoon manufactures have over the years introduced hundreds of new colors patterns and finishes using prism, holographic, glow, and glitter all to enhance vibrant colors and flash of spoons.

Keep these guidelines in mind for your casting spoons:

  • Clear-Slightly Stained Waters: Stick with classic colors of red and white with nickel back, black and white with nickel back, yellow five of diamonds in red with brass back, and combinations of nickel/silver – gold/brass are your best bet.

  • Stained-Dark Water: Use firetiger with brass back or orange/yellow and nickel combinations

For trolling spoons, note the following:

Universally, the best color is all silver or gold including combinations of purple, blue, or green hues to mimic the forage of alewives, ciscoes, and smelt.

A relatively new and much improved addition to spoon colors is the glow in dark colors. After charging up the glow paint on the spoons with a bright light, they will take fish in the dark or stained water.
