Checklist for Saltwater Fishing

Saltwater fishermen can enjoy fishing in a variety of locations where saltwater is present. Shore, surf, pier, and even open ocean can make the perfect venue for your saltwater fishing endeavours. But in order to make the most of your experience, you’ll want to ensure that you’ve packed the right gear for a safe and comfortable trip.

If you’re planning to fish as a complementary activity to your canoeing, kayaking, boating, or camping trip, then be sure to check out our other checklists for those activities as well to make sure that you’re fully prepared for the day(s) ahead! Otherwise, have a look at the checklist below, and run through your inventory of gear. Always be sure to bring your up-to-date fishing permits and licenses along for the trip.

Essential Fishing Gear

Depending on what type of experience level you are, which equipment you prefer to use, and what your target catches are, you may have multiple options for your rod, reel, and lures. Saltwater conditions can break down standard equipment, so you’ll want to ensure that you’ve invested in rods, reels, and accessories designed to withstand the rigors of saltwater conditions. For a breakdown of each type, be sure to visit our Fishing Learning Center for extensive details on every option available.
