Checklist for Fishing with Kids

Family outings and adventures can make for unique bonding experiences, and many parents choose to take their kids fishing for some much needed outdoor fun. But as many parents know, bringing along a child for any type of outdoor activity requires a little extra planning and a lot more patience. From stocking your bags with additional equipment to ensuring that you’ve got more than you need to keep the little ones occupied, there are a multitude of items and accessories you’ll want to bring for your fishing trip when you’re including children.

If you’re planning to fish as a complementary activity to your canoeing, kayaking, boating, or camping trip, then be sure to check out our other checklists for those activities as well to make sure that you’re fully prepared for the day(s) ahead! Otherwise, have a look at the checklist below, and run through your inventory of gear. If you’re simply fishing for your activity for the day, then plan to visit a watering hole that isn’t too far from home, as the drive can be aggravating for children. You can prepare for your trip the night before by gathering different fishing games and activities to take with you during your excursion as well. Always be sure to bring your up-to-date fishing permits and licenses along for the trip.

Essential Fishing Gear

When you’re fishing with children, you’ll want to ensure that you not only bring your own gear but that you’ve also included gear that is appropriate for your child’s age, experience, and size. For a breakdown of each type of accessory, be sure to visit our Fishing Learning Center for extensive details on every option available. For young children, always handle dangerous items like hooks and jigs yourself, as these can pose a safety hazard.
